Here is a simple way to use 3 beats in a measure when you improvise with both hands. These are pages 50 and 51 from the Teach Yourself to Improvise with Chords Book 1. The entire process is outlined step-by-step in the book and is easy to follow.
Remember, however you choose to improvise with both hands, the only notes that are to be read are the melody. The rest of the accompaniment is improvised from the chords without reading!
