Mother’s Day is coming up soon, and this is one of the most famous mothers of all time. Do you know who she is?
The mother of the artist, James McNeill Whistler!
Anna Matilda McNeill was visiting her son and posed in place of the model who didn’t show up.
Whistler wasn’t particularly interested in creating another portrait with this work. He considered it to be an experiment in color, and titled it, “Arrangement in Black and Gray No. 1” with the subtitle of “Portrait of the Artist’s Mother.“
By the way, he signed his artwork with a butterfly monogram made from his initials. That’s different!

About the Author, Composer,
Illustrator, Educator, and
Eternal Optimist
Leslie Young is the author/composer/illustrator of the PIANO Revolution method books (originally titled as the Revolutionary Piano Method). She co-founded a K-12th grade charter school in Texas and has been a piano teacher for over 40 years. She has had experience teaching a variety of students tackling piano for the first time or as returning students.
